This project grew out of recognition by a number of                                               organisations working within the community that Gelligaer                                               had a wonderful Roman Heritage that was not being                                               interpreted to the community or visitors. In 2006, a Working                                               Group was established with the purpose of ensuring that                                               Gelligaer’s Roman story would be commemorated,                                               celebrated and shared.

The Working Group appointed a consultant to look at the                                               interpretation of the site in Gelligaer. Form this, a plan for the                                               project was produced. These were discussed and   presented to the community in an open day at Neuadd St Cattwgs Community Hall   on Saturday 15th September 2007. This was a chance for you to give your view and   help shape the future for Gelligaer! The results from the open day were very positive   with 100% of attendees wanting to tell Gelligaer’s story. We think it is important to   generate interest in the site and show people Gelligaer’s place in Roman history.   We want to make people proud of Gelligaer!

In November 2007, the working group submitted a funding application to the Rural   Development Plan. This is a new source of funding that has been targeted at the   most rural wards in the county borough as part of the Rural Development Plan for   Wales 2007 – 2013. We have asked for £120,500 to enhance our rural heritage. If
the money is awarded, we will:

  • Develop a roadside interpretation by the stone fort
  • Implement self guided trails
  • Develop a ‘clue trail’ around the site for children and families
  • Improve fencing
  • Produce a site guide
  • Develop a web presence
  • Produce educational materials
